BC Uncommon Chicken Alert: RBA: COOK’S PETREL in Port Coquitlam

On Dec 28, 2022 a feminine Cook dinner’s Petrel was discovered alive (however grounded) at 2110 Rowland Avenue, Port Coquitlam. The chook was found by a member of the general public and brought to the Wildlife Rescue Affiliation of BC. Upon receipt of the chook, they instantly noticed that it was severely emaciated. Regardless of their finest efforts, the chook’s situation failed to enhance and the chook was humanely euthanized on Dec thirty first.

After the chook was euthanized, it was transported to the Canadian Wildlife Service workplace in Delta. At a later level, it was necropsied by a Veterinarian from the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Meals, Animal Well being Centre on the Beatty Museum. The necropsy decided the intercourse (feminine) and that there was no proof of trauma. It’s believed that the chook’s grounding was because of its excessive emaciation/weakened situation. After the Veterinarian completed the necropsy, the chook was despatched to the Collections Curator, Cowan Tetrapod Assortment, UBC Beaty Biodiversity Museum.

Wingspan: 69.9 cm

Wing chord: 22.3 cm

Tail Size: 8.6 cm

Complete physique size: 30.8 cm

Tarsus size: 3.347 cm

Culmen size: 2.581 cm

The chook was despatched to a number of seabird specialists together with Steve Howell and Michael Drive who confirmed the ID and dominated out Pycroft’s Petrel.

That is the second confirmed photographed report for BC. The opposite chook hit a window in Lillooet on Dec 4, 2007.
